Most students spend their spring break relaxing at the beach or maybe in the mountains. But Dawson MECHS students Jacob Barlowe and Victoria Birlew spent their spring break learning about our Nation’s history in Washington, DC.  Both seniors were selected to attend the annual Washington D.C. trip with other MECHS students.  In all, 16 MECHS Chaperones accompanied 27 MECHS students for the three-day trip.

Students left for Washington, D.C. early in the morning Sunday, April 3rd and arrived late that evening to begin their action packed tour. Students and chaperones traveled by charter bus via Daniel’s Charters.  Upon arriving Sunday, the group began by visiting the Pentagon Memorial.

On day two, they visited Arlington National Cemetery, the US Marine Corps War Memorial, the White House, the Martin Luther King, Jr. and Roosevelt Memorials.  Participants also enjoyed a nice dinner provided by trip sponsors at Long Horns’ Steakhouse to be followed by a sunset walking tour of the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials.

The next day, the tours continued!  The group visited the Library of Congress, and then had a picture made with Senator Perdue.  Then they had lunch at the Capitol, followed by a tour of the Capitol.  Students were also able to tour the Smithsonian Museums of their choice – the Natural History Museums, the National Gallery of Art, the National Air and Space Museum or the Native American Museum.

Both students said they had an amazing time and that this trip was an amazing experience.  Victoria Birlew said that, “None of pictures or videos can compare to being there in real life.  It was an amazing experience and I learned so much…seeing everything makes me think about it all.  I am so glad I had this opportunity to meet new friends and learn about our country’s history.”

Director of Performance Dr. Joe Cash and Assistant Superintendent Tracy Sanford meticulously planned the action packed trip.  The trip was no cost to attendees thanks to its sponsors:  The Cottrell Foundation, The American Legion Post 239, Dahlonega Ministerial Association, and Amicalola Electric Membership Corporation.  The sponsorship of this trip provided an opportunity that students would not have otherwise.  Dawson MECHS greatly appreciates all of the time and effort Dr. Joe Cash and Tracy Sanford took to plan this trip as well as the tremendous donation from these sponsors.

Congratulations to our Chick Fil-A Student of the Month, Jerrell Smith.  Jerrell was chosen for this award because of his hard work and dedication to the program.  Dawson MECHS Site Administrator Anita Cox said, "He always has a smile on his face, shows up eager to learn and eager to work." Jerrell is self-motivated and driven.  He is also an apprentice for his father, a dental lab technician.  Jerrell hopes to gain insight from this apprenticeship to help him with his future endeavors.  He plans to pursue a career in the dental field.

Ben Cash

We are so proud to announce our first graduate, Ben Cash! Ben is the son of Russell and Lisa Jo Cash. Ben chose to attend Dawson Mountain Education Charter School to facilitate his goal of becoming a Music Minister for Free Chapel.  Ben said that he knew that Dawson MECHS was the perfect place to help him accomplish his goal because, “Everyone is a strong Christian in leadership here and it related to me.”  He liked that the program and classes were very direct.  He said that he can “… get all of the help I need, if I needed it.”  Ben plans to attend Hillsong College in Australia to pursue a degree in Pastoral Leadership.

Dawson MECHS Students visited the State Capitol last week and met with Senator Steve Gooch, State Representative Kevin Tanner, and other elected leaders. Site Administrator Shannon Gable accompanied students Samantha Huggard and Jerrel Smith to tour the Capitol with other MECHS Students.  This trip was a wonderful opportunity for students to see leaders in action.   A big "Thanks" to MECHS for giving our students this opportunity that they will never forget!  We also want to thank our elected leaders for hosting this event and meeting with students.
